About Battleships
Traditionally Battleships is a guessing game which is played by two people. In it's early days people played Battleships using pencil and paper. The Battleships game inventer, Clifford Von Wickler, never actually patented the game and it was soon published by Milton Bradley Company in 1943 as "Broadsides, the Game of Naval Strategy".
Each player has two square grids (usually 10 × 10) and the seperate squares in the grid are labelled by a letter and number. On one grid the player arranges ships and records the shots by the opponent. On the other grid the player records their own shots.
Each ship takes up a set number of squares on the grid. The amount of squares depends on the type of ship. The ships can be arranged both horizontally and vertically but no overlapping can occur.
After all the ships have been set in place, the first round starts. In turn, each player says out loud a target square in the opponents' grid which is to be shot at. If a ship occupies the square, then it takes a hit. The opponent says whether or not the shot was successful in hitting any of their ships and then takes a turn. When all of the squares of a ship have been hit, the ship is sunk. After all of one player's ships have been sunk, the game ends and the other player wins. Our Battleships game gives a twist to the original by introducing trivia questions between each shoot.
Although based on the traditional game, our version of Battleships is rather different as general knowledge questions have to be answered in order to sink the ships. This makes the game far more challenging and fun!
